While researching references to Berkhamsted in Graham Greene’s writing for a guided walk for the 2018 Festival, my attention was diverted by a mention, in chapter 1 of his autobiography, A Sort of Life, of Mrs Figg’s toy-shop. (Greene prefers the spelling with a hyphen.)
The shop featured, in passing, as Greene ticked off a list of places of interest in the High Street which one passed on “the two-mile trudge” between Chapel Street and Northchurch.
Later in the same chapter Greene recalls that, as a special treat, on the day of King George V’s coronation, he was allowed to choose a toy from the toyshop.
